2011 Year in Review

31 Dec

2011 was a great year for me. Here’s a few of the highlights.

In February, Jim and I completed our first detox cleanse, which was something I’ve always wanted to try. We enjoyed it so much, we’re planning on doing it again next week to start off the new year on a positive, healthy note.

I changed my hair, a lot! Close to four times! I never changed my hair that often at any point in my life. It was fun and I plan on continuing this spontaneity into 2012.

I did the 30 for 30 challenge twice. Once was in the winter, and once in the summer. Looking back at all the photos, it’s a night and day difference between the two challenges. During the summer challenge my style really came into it’s own and my wardrobe finally started working for me as opposed to against me. It was a fantastic learning experience and I am way more confident in my style choices as a result.

I turned 30 and had the best birthday party ever! Jim and about 20 of my friends all joined me celebrating it doing my favorite activity, karaoke! I can’t thing of a better way to celebrate this important turning point in my life.

I made it a point to try out a variety of restaurants I’ve been wanting to try out for a while, and as a result ate an amazing array of delicious vegan food! I plan on trying even more in 2012.

I really got to enjoy my city and see and learn so many new things. From the Armory Show, to Eagle Street Rooftop Farm and most recently a screen printing class at Gowanus Print Lab, I explored so many new things. 2011 was not a couch potato year for me.

I traveled, a lot. For both work and for fun but mostly for work. Some destinations I got to check out included Las Vegas, Denver, Annapolis Maryland, Philadelphia, and Miami. One of my goals for 2012 is to visit and explore more cities in the US that Jim and I both have never been to, and I’m excited to begin planning that.

Me at the protest

I participated in my first protest ever and it felt amazing. This was actually one of my resolutions for 2011 and it feels great to have actually done it. I hope to continue remaining active in causes important to me.

GTFO

I survived an earthquake and a hurricane, all in the same week. Both were minor occurrences, but since we never have those types of things happen in New York City it made for a memorable week.

Jim and I celebrated out third wedding anniversary and he surprised me with this beautiful, candle lit meal from my favorite restaurant in the comfort of our own home. He also surprised me this year by announcing he decided to become a vegetarian.

Jim and I hosted our very first vegetarian (mostly vegan) Thanksgiving. It’s been a lifetime dream of mine to be able to do this, and I’m so happy and fortunate to have such a great husband, family and friends who were so excited and supportive of the event.

My blog was featured on some of my favorite websites, including MTV Style, WordPress’ Freshly Pressed and the best vegan blog ever, Vegansaurus. As a result, I’ve gained so many new readers all of which I’ve really enjoyed getting to know and interacting with.

One thing blogging in 2011 provided me with is an entire photo diary of everything that’s happened that I found to be interesting or important. Looking at it now, Brooklyn Bliss has become so much more for me than I had initially started it for, which was a fashion blog. It’s instead become my online journal and photo album, documenting life’s important moments. I’m so grateful to have taken the plunge and started my blog, because it’s given me back way more than I have put into it. I’m very grateful for that.

I hope everyone else enjoyed 2011 as much as I did. With that said, I’m excited to start 2012 and share that chapter of my life as well. Happy New Year to everyone and I’ll be back on here posting next year!

Feld Christmas Card 2011

As promised after my Christmas card photos outtakes post, Here’s our Christmas card Jim and I sent to our family and friends this year. I hope everyone has a fantastic holiday weekend!

Christmas Card Outtakes

On our 5th date of Christmas Jim, Portia and I donned our ugliest (and only) Christmas sweaters for our Christmas card photo shoot.  We took a TON of pictures, but these were some of the funniest.  We initially wanted to do a funny photo on the card, but ended up deciding it would probably be even funnier if we took a serious portrait wearing these ridiculous sweaters.

By the way, is my neighbor’s house not the perfect backdrop for a Brooklyn style holiday photo shoot?

Ugly Sweater Time

Ugly Christmas Sweater{Terrrifying Christmas Sweater and fake glasses: Monk in Williamsburg; Pleather Skirt: UO via eBay; Tights: Beacon’s Closet; Booties: Forever21}

It’s been a while since I’ve done an outfit post so here you go!  This is actually a sneak peak at what I wore on our Christmas cards this year.  Jim and I have always wanted to do a photo card wearing ugly Christmas sweaters and this year we made it happen.  I love this horrendously ugly Christmas sweater so much I’m actually wearing the exact same thing to our office Christmas party today.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the outtakes from our photo shoot, which was our 5th date of Christmas.

12 Dates of Christmas Screen Printing Class

Jim and I a while back had purchased some Living Social coupons for a screen printing class at Gowanus Print Labs.  I’m horrible in that I never use my “groupons”, so considering these were a tad bit more expensive, we scheduled our class WAY in advance.  In hindsight, I’m really glad we scheduled it for the holiday season because it was such a fun activity to do together.

Gowanus Print Labs is a beautiful print studio in you guessed it, the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. Housed in an industrial area, I was pleasantly surprised at how large, bright and clean it was.  They also had some sick graffiti throughout the studio.

The class starts off with you either drawing or printing out your acetate stencil.  Jim and I both brought digital files to play with, and they printed it out for us on the clear plastic acetate.  From there, they showed us how to make a photo emulsion stencil, which is what we’d use to actually print.

They had hundreds of colors for us to choose from to print with, or we could mix our own.  We also had the option to print one tee-shirt, or a few art prints.  I opted for the tee with a dark gray ink, and Jim opted for the paper with neon yellow ink.

Look I learned how to silk screen!!

Here’s my finished product!  I’m actually going to take this tee-shirt and cut it up and re-style it into a rock and roll style shirt.  It came out awesome!

I can’t speak for Jim, but I totally fell in love with screen printing.  Though I went to art school, print making was the one class I never took but always wanted to.  Knowing now there are several studios you can rent time at to screen print makes my mind swirl with all sorts of ideas for tee-shirt and poster projects.  I can’t wait to print more!

Have you ever screen printed or taken a creative class with your significant other?

Two Fridays ago, Jim and I went on a double date with our friends Tracy and Barak. We drove into Manhattan to check out John’s on 12th Street, an Italian restaurant known for having an additional, entirely vegan menu! Even cannolis! I was in heaven.

If you’re ever in the city with a large group of people with varied dietary restrictions, I highly recommend checking them out.

12 Dates of Christmas 2011

One night after work Jim and I took a drive to Dyker Heights. Dyker Heights is a neighborhood in south Brooklyn that’s well known this time of year for going all out when it comes to holiday decorating. We had never been to see the decorations, and we definitely were not disappointed!

12 Dates of Christmas 2011

Damn. It’s amazing how immediately following Thanksgiving life blasts past at warp speed. I’ve been busier than ever at work ( lots of travel, yuck!) and on top of that trying to get caught up for the holidays.

While catching up with my Google Reader, I read about this great concept called “The 12 Dates of Christmas” on the Rockstar Diaries. Basically if your married or in a relationship, the holiday season is a great excuse to make time for 12 dates. Jim and I are trying it this year.

Our first date was to check out the Brooklyn Night Bazaar, which was a short 3 day bazaar filled with artisan gifts, treats and food. Though we didn’t find any gifts there, we did pig out on some Asia Dogs and Regal Vegan grub. And the mulled wine was a nice touch too.
