Vegan Versions / PS1 Bag

30 Mar

The fashion blogoshere was all a buzz this past week about Target’s Mossimo brand selling a bag that looks eerily similar to the Proenza Schouler PS1 bag and Proenza Schouler being ticked off about it. The bags do look pretty similar. In the image above the Target one is on top and the real PS1 is on the bottom. I’ve always really liked the PS1 bag but wouldn’t buy one for obvious reasons (ummm… it’s made of leather).

Timing on this story breaking kinda made me laugh because I just over the past few weeks I had been looking online for a non-leather, similar version and came across the Target one but just hadn’t gotten around to buying it. While discussing the NY Magazine story with my husband this weekend over coffee, he said I should get it just because of all the controversy. I hadn’t even told him my original plans to get one. Who am I to argue with him, right?

Drum Milk Motor

29 Mar

This past weekend I felt like getting a bit crazy on the outfit front and try putting some items together I wouldn’t normally even think to do. As I was getting dressed and putting the outfit together my husband said…

“You look like you’re going to participate in a drum circle, then milk a cow and them jump on a motorcycle”.

I guess the maxi dress, chambray shirt and pleather jacket are a pretty weird combination, and I do see his point.  He didn’t tell me to change, which he’ll often do if whenever I put together something that’s a total failure.  So with that in mind I’m thinking this look was a success!

African Coconut Curry Soup

28 Mar

One of my absolute favorite recipes is a simple African Coconut Curry Soup one I found on Epicurious a while back. Not only is it delicious, but it’s a great way to use leftover rice. It’s also super quick to make and only uses a few ingredients, many of which are standard pantry items. It’s creamy, filling and super satisfying. My omnivore hubby loves it.

Check out the recipe here.

Hollywood Stunts Sign

A few weeks ago my friend Tracy emailed me about a Living Social deal that seemed just to fun to pass up. It was to purchase a coupon towards either a stunt double free fall class or trampoline class at a local place called Hollywood Stunts. For $25 you got a two-hour long class. It sounded like fun so we bought our deals and reserved our spots in the next available class we both could attend.

Onions

Hollywood Stunts initially was a bit difficult to find. It’s located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and it’s in an industrial area. After we both drove around looking for it for around 10-15 minutes, we finally caved and whipped out our iPhones. We successfully located it at the end of a long, dead-end alley. Their neighbors apparently were onion distributors.

Hollywood Stunts Entrance

Entering the place you can’t help but check out all the cool posters and film permit signs they had adorned over the entrance. It was very “Brooklyn” if you ask me, I loved it.

Lockers

We were told to put our stuff in the lockers in the back, and head on over for our class which was going to start in a few minutes. Luckily we both had just come from the gym, so I had my lock with me.

Inside Hollywood Stunts

The space was a huge warehouse space. Towards the back they had a giant scaffolding and inflatable cushion they used for the free fall class. On the right hand side of the space they had the giant trampoline, where we’d be having our class.

Our instructor was the best. She started off teaching us the basics, like the proper way to jump and how to use our arms to propel ourselves higher. Most importantly she showed us how to “brake”, or to stop quickly. Who would have thought there were so many techniques? As a kid on trampolines you never think of that sort of stuff.

After the basics, we moved onto some more difficult moves, like pikes, tucks and rotating turns. My favorite was when we did “sits”, where you let your butt hit the trampoline and you bounce back up.

All in all, we had so much fun taking this class! Sometimes it’s great to cut loose and act like a kid again. Not only that, but it was a fantastic workout. I was so sore the following day! We both decided next time we’re going to head back to check out their free fall class and get a taste of what it’s like to do stunt work.

Hollywood Stunts is a great, hidden jem of an activity in Brooklyn. If you’re in the area I highly recommend checking it out. I know I’ll be back.

Vegan Versions / Jeffrey Campbell Lita Boots

23 Mar

I may be a bit behind the times here, but recently I can not stop thinking about Jeffrey Campbell’s Lita Boots.  I see them everywhere.  All over the style blogs, all over the streets of NYC.  I love everything about them.  They’re chunky, sturdy, combat boot like and just all in all cool looking.

One thing the Lita boots are not is vegan.  So I’ve been looking online everywhere to try to find a similar pair not made of leather.  Today I happened across these beauties and I’m beside myself.

These babies are called the “Lola” boot and they’re made by a company in Indonesia called June and Julia.  They’re handmade to order and look really similar to the Lita boots.  Oh, did I mention they’re only $40 (USD)?

I think I need to place an order.

Vegan Manicures

23 Mar

Priti NYC Nail Products 2

Probably the only really girly thing I like to go do is get a mani-pedi.  I always feel way more put together when my nails are done.  It’s weird.  Otherwise I’m pretty much a total tomboy.  My clothes need to feel like pajamas and my makeup and hair can’t take longer than five minutes.

Even before going vegan, it’s always concerned me how many chemicals are used in nail care products.  Most all the self-care products I use are organic and vegan.  Though there are a few salons in NYC that offer organic vegan manicures, like the Green Spa, they’re a bit out of the way for me to make it a normal occurence.  So instead over the past several months I’ve been searching for eco-friendly vegan nail products I could use at home to do my mani-pedis myself.

I was so excited to see the Time Out New York Vegan Style Guide listed a new bath and body shop in my neighborhood called Skinny Skinny.  After checking out their website, I saw they stock the full line of Priti NYC nail products.  I could get not only vegan, chemical free nail polish but also nail polish remover!  Score!

This past weekend while walking the dog with my hubby we passed the store and I ran in quick to pick up a few things.  I got two polish colors.  I allowed my husband to pick out one he’d like to see me wear (and he picked bright, florescent neon pink), and I picked out silver.  Ever since seeing Andy’s silver manicure on her blog this past week I’ve been obsessed with it.  I also picked up Priti NYC’s soy based polish remover.

Sunday night I went ahead and gave myself my first mani-pedi in ages.  I was beyond happy with the results as well as the quality of these awesome, eco and vegan friendly nail products.  They were super easy to use and apply and I didn’t even really need a base or top coat.

I’m totally planninng on stocking up on a variety of their polishes so I can change up my manicure look more often.  What are your favorite nail colors for spring?  Any suggestions on colors for me to pick up?

What I Learned During the Clean Detox

19 Mar

No more bread for me! {image source: http://www.seriouseats.com}

After being done with the program for about a two weeks now, I’ve had some time to really think about what was good and what sucked about the Clean Detox Program

The Good:

  • I lost around 10 pounds.
  • My skin’s the clearest it’s been in like, forever.
  • I no longer had a “poof” on my lower abdomen.  I had an almost 6 pack.  It was awesome.
  • I no longer felt the need to needlessly snack or overeat.  Though I’m a pretty healthy eater, doing this program really made me realize exactly how little food our bodies really need to operate.   Also, when I do snack I find myself craving what I had snacked on during the program.  Almonds in particular.
  • Morning smoothies are awesome.  They keep me going energy wise through lunch no problem without the aid of caffeine.  They’re also easy to make and portable being I have to dart out in a rush to work every morning.
  • I got used to drinking lots of water.  It’s a great habit to get into.  I now feel weird leaving the house without my water bottle.

The Sucky:

  • The massive, horrendous headache you get within the first few days when the toxins start to leave your system.
  • The crankiness and irritability you experience for a few days on the program.
  • Trying to train for a half marathon while sustaining your body on minimal calories.  Next time I do this program I’m not going to train for any sort of race during it.
  • Watching TV in the evening and every commercial being for some kind of fast food and you had your last meal of the evening several hours prior.  Talk about difficult to fight cravings.  We eventually stopped watching TV in the evening because of this.
  • You have to come off this program gradually.  We didn’t and ate a bunch of crap our first week off of it and felt like crap.  I guess in general it’s easy to say you feel how you eat.  If you eat crap you feel like crap.
  • Apparently after introducing bread and pasta back into my diet, I’ve learned i get tremendously bloated after eating them.  I guess I’m intolerant to them.  Both the hubby and I agree we’re going to really work to limit bread and pasta in our diet.

All in all both the hubby and I agree we’re going to make doing this cleanse part of our annual routine.  The end benefits far outweigh any of the headaches, crankiness and fatigue we encountered during it.  We’ve never felt better.  After our first week off the program and falling off the wagon so badly, we’ve actually decided we’re going to do another week on the cleanse to get back on track and then gradually wean ourselves off of it the way you are supposed to.

Have you done Clean or another detox program?  Was your experience similar to mine?  I’d love to hear about it so either comment or email me!

Fashionable Camera Straps

18 Mar

I love my new DSLR Camera and am patiently awaiting the arrival of my new THEIT bag before really taking it out on the town.  One final accessory I’ve been on the hunt for is a strap to replace the ugly “Canon EOS” one it came with.

Of course everything I look for needs to be vegan and suit my tastes.  Here’s a few that caught my eye.

Black Snake Embossed Strap from Capturing Couture.

Zebra Print Strap from Capturing Couture.

Black and White Striped Strap from Capturing Couture

Because I’ve been sharing the camera with my husband, we opted to go with the black and white striped one so we can both look stylish while toting the camera around. He actually picked it up for me while at Adorama in the city picking us up some photography supplies. Gotta love a man who will pick up a “fashion” camera strap to make his wife happy.

Comfy Driving

Last week I had to travel to PA to run a training seminar for my job. My travel involved a close to 3 hour car drive. If there’s anything I hate more in the world, it’s driving long distances especially by myself. Yuck.

I wanted to be comfortable not only all day at work but also during my hellish drive after work to my destination. A sleek dress, tights and flats suited this need perfectly.

Lazy Sunday

16 Mar

{Pleather Jacket: Target; Cascade Cardigan: Alloy; Pill Tee-Shirt (not shown): Brooklyn Flea; Sneakers: Converse; Dog Carrier: Urban Link via Amazon; Sunglasses: Brooklyn Flea}

Sunday was my husband’s birthday. We had actually celebrated the night prior at Matt Torrey’s with some friends and needless to say got home pretty late. We woke up a little hung over and instead of staying at home all day whining about not feeling well, we instead got dressed and got out of the house. We had breakfast at a local diner we just discovered, and then brought Portia into the city with us to go to the Apple Store in an unfruitful attempt to purchase a set of iPad 2′s.

All in all we had a great walk about the city and Brooklyn and then collapsed at home and lounged the rest of the day around the apartment. I’d consider it the best lazy weekend day I’ve had in a long time.
