Haircutaversary

25 Feb

February 25th 2010 was a big day for me. It was the day I chopped of my hair and ended over a decade of chemical straightening and finally embraced my natural curls.

I had straightened my hair from when I was 10 years old. It was the early 90′s and perms and curly hair in general were passé. Hair products that were available resulted in crunchy, unflattering fros. After being teased a bit in elementary school, my mother allowed me to play hooky one day and took me into the city to have my curls chemically straightened. Afterwards upon returning to school I remember one of my classmates acknowledging it announcing “Corrie! No Fro!”

The following 16 years most people who knew me thought my hair was naturally straight. It was my dirty little secret. As far as haircuts go, I generally had the same cut from high school through college: really long with face framing layers. I received tons of compliments so I never thought to change it.

The haircut I had for basically 17 years.

Over the years in my late 20′, something snapped. I was always pressed for time and I was just plain sick of blowing out my hair, which took almost 45 minutes. I made the scary decision to grow out my straightner and work with my natural hair texture after getting married. After finding a photo of a totally badass curly style I fell in love with and was sold. The hard part would be the grow out.

My haircut inspiration image.

All in all the grow out process took less time than I thought. Only around 17 months. I was so excited yet insanely nervous the day of my haircut. What if my curls are weird? What if this style doesn’t look good on me? Am I making a mistake? My straight hair looks good why change it?

I was smart in that when I decided to make this switch, I immediately started going to a curly hair specialist to help with the grow out as well as the final curly cut. I had sent her my inspiration photo in advance and the day of my big chop she was prepared.

She reviewed with me as she chopped away how my new hair would have to be cut (while dry) and styled (mostly done while wet in the shower). To be honest, after it was cut and washes and I was sitting under the dryer I was petrified, my wet hair looked no different from the flat, crunchy 80′s hair I remembered. When my hair was dry, she then told me to flip my head over, “scrunch out the crunch”, fluff it up a bit and flip it back over.

Under the dryer, patiently awaiting the results of the big chop.

Holy. Freaking. Crap! My hair looked amazing! I looked like a totally different person!

The results, taken by my husband immediately upon returning home.

It took a little time to learn how to style it, but after I mastered it styling my hair was so much easier than my previous routine. Better yet, the compliments I received after were more bountiful than with my straight hair, but more meaningful being people noted this cut was more “me”. After so many years of trying to blend in, I was finally my own, unique person.

This newfound confidence totally changed my life. I totally revamped my wardrobe, started experimenting with my style (and blogging about it), plus I even went further in my career.  I also over the course of the year changed the cut three or four times (mostly variations in my bangs), three or four times in one year as compared to never-changing it for 17 years!  The changes were so profound, I had to commemorate it in this post.

For all you girls with naturally textured hair currently hiding it to become what you think society wants you to look like, I urge you please stop! Your natural texture is the way you were intended to be, so don’t fight it! You won’t regret it I promise you.

Do you currently straighten or alter your  natural hair?  Why do you do it and have you ever considered going natural?

Karaoke Time

24 Feb

{Striped Shirt: Forever 21; Jeans: Mavi; Over the Knee Boots: Alloy; Military Jacket (not shown): Stoop Sale Find; Earrings: Junk in Williamsburg}

I didn’t take a formal outfit pic this day, but did manage to find one of me at my friend’s birthday party (also her surprise engagement party!  Her man popped the question that day just before seeing us all!).  Here I am rocking karaoke.

You may or may not know both my husband and  I are karaoke fiends.  I even somehow managed to break my foot doing karaoke.  Yes, you heard that right.  I somehow managed to leave a non-contact activity with a contact sport injury.  Long story short I fell off a stage at a business trade show (of all places) after singing “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette.  What I should have known is there was a step in the shadows off the side of the stage that was meant to be stepped on while exiting it.  One of my co-workers at the trade show nicknamed me “Rainbow Foot” due to all the pretty colors my foot turned that trip.

Do you do karaoke?  What’s your go-to song?  My current one is Hanky Panky by Madonna.  It’s from the Dick Tracy movie soundtrack.

Friday

23 Feb

{Chambray Shirt: Old Navy; Belt: Gifted; Scarf: The Limited; Jeans: Alloy; Oxfords: Target}

I took these 30 for 30 outfit photos so long ago now that all I can remember from this day was that it was a Friday.  Apparently my color matching/ anti-clashing skills weren’t too on point for the day.  I see now the outfit would have looked better without the belt, and perhaps without that lipstick.  That’s what I get for playing with my makeup on a workday.

All in all that’s what this process is all about, right?  Documenting what works and doesn’t work and evolving from there.

THEIT

22 Feb

The Bossi Camera Bag by THEIT

I am so freaking excited!  I ordered my THEIT ”Bossi” Camera bag today!  When I first got my new DSLR they were out of stock, so I put my name on the waiting list.  I got the notice today they were available and put in my order immediately.

The interior of the bag.

Some things I love about this bag…

  • It’s VEGAN!
  • The interior pockets are removable, so I can easily use this as a regular purse and not just as a camera bag.  If it wasn’t for this and the bag being really stylish on its own, I wouldn’t splurged as much as I did on it.
  • It’s way more chic than a standard ugly camera bag.  I highly doubt while carrying it anyone would even think it’s a camera bag.

My new bag ships in March.  I can’t wait to receive it and tote my camera with me everywhere I go!

Clean Detox Week One Recap

21 Feb

My vegan sushi lunch on day six.

Day One-Monday February 14th:The first day was tougher than I thought. I wasn’t necessarily hungry, but just the thought that I would only get to eat one solid meal just really made me want to snack. Plus it was Valentine’s Day and everywhere I looked there was chocolate and treats. Another tough thing was the raw food deal. My “soup” for dinner tonight was supposed to be served cold, which was just weird to me. At the end of the day both my husband and I had headaches. His was waaaay worse than mine. He seemed really sick but stuck through it. From what I hear this is normal the first week or so. Hopefully it passes soon.

Day Two-Tuesday February 15th: Holy headache! At around 11am at work I got a headache so bad that by the time lunch rolled around, I couldn’t think of anything but the headache. Then the nausea set in. I attempted to take a nap on my lunch break but that wasn’t working, so I ended up heading home from work early, popping a few valerian root (only herbal remedies are recommended on this cleanse, so no advil for me) and taking a nap. Later on, I felt full on sick the way my husband did the night prior. I even had to cancel my personal training session at the gym. It was seriously almost as bad as when I had food poisoning. Come to find out, this sort of headache was normal on any kind of cleanse or detox. It’s the toxins being released into your blood stream which makes it thicker, and therefore causes headaches. Yuck. I’m so thankful my husband took such great care of me so I could head to bed early (8pm) and try to sleep it off.

Day Three- Tuesday February 16th: I woke up this morning feeling refreshed and great… at around 3 am! I couldn’t fall back asleep so rolled with it. I just kept my eyes closed and relaxed in bed and got up around 5 am. Had my breakfast shake, went to work and had a great, productive day. My gluten-free pesto pasta I packed for lunch was thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated, whereas yesterday I couldn’t really enjoy it due to my headache. I had a late evening at work today and got home around 7 pm and immediately had my soup dinner (I was lazy and had an Imagine Brand Butternut Squash soup instead of making my own). I had originally planned to run 5 miles today, but that was out of the question since it was so late and I was still feeling the effects of feeling like crap the day prior. I for a second hesitated and thought to not run at all, but instead got in my workout gear and got to the gym for a quick 2 miler on the treadmill. I’m so glad I did, I felt great after! Granted I was tired and couldn’t do more than 2 miles it felt great to sweat. I also had my best nights sleep in a long time.

Day 4- February 17th: I woke up this morning, looked in the mirror, and my skin is already brighter and clearer. My husband even commented on it. I woke up in a good mood and ended the day in a good mood. I was really productive at work. I got a little hazy and tired while at my hair appointment (I felt bad my stylist was all chatty and I was like a zombie) but all in all it was a good cleanse day.

Day 5- February 18th: I felt pretty much the same as the day prior. Good and focused with a decent amount of energy. I didn’t even eat all my lunch and I still had lots if energy for the gym as well as cleaning up around the apartment after work. My hubby however was pretty cranky today. Boo.

Day 6- February 19th: I woke up this morning a little fatigued I think from my workout yesterday. After my morning juice (first one ever made with my juicer I’ve never used) I was then full of energy. My best friend came out to Brooklyn this morning from Manhattan to check out my gym with me and attend a yoga class and then a kettle bell class right after it. I had plenty of energy to put in a really great workout today. After we had lunch at a local sushi joint, where I ordered as “clean” as I could according to the program and also ordered some food to go for my husband. Little did I know the mushrooms in our mushroom rolls were marinated in soy sauce, which is a big no-no on the program. I felt fine after lunch, but my husband did notice some discomfort shortly after lunch, so it may be possible he’s allergic to soy. We’ll know for sure when the program is over after we slowly reintroduce the “no-no” foods. Later on in the afternoon I got really cranky and started to feel sick. Not sure why. I think it had to do with it taking me several hours to plan our grocery shopping list for next week on this program. It’s pretty difficult to find meals and soups that are easy to make in the timeframe I have available to actually cook. I plan on getting to bed at a decent time this evening and resting up being I have a busy yet relaxing day tomorrow.

Day 7- February 20th:

I woke up well rested and in a great mood.  The hubby and I had our morning smoothies (which we have grown to really love) and I dragged my butt out in the freezing cold to run 5 miles, and did so in less time than my previous weeks run!  All in all throughout the day we were both super productive.  Hubby ran to Costco and ran some errands for us while I did our grocery shopping and dropped off laundry.  I even made time for myself today to visit a local spa to get a massage (which is recommended on this program, hells yeah!) as well as to do some hot/cold water therapy in their hydrospa.  All I can say to summarize this experience is “Aaaahhhhh”.  I was so relaxed after and felt fantastic.  I was a bit tired when I got home in the evening, so after making our lunch for the following day both the hubby and I relaxed and watched a movie.

Overall

I can’t believe we’ve already finished seven days!  The first few days were really tough, but now that we’ve gotten into the schedule and are used to eating (and drinking, you have to drink sooooo much water!) this way it’s actually really, really easy.  Both of us have tons of energy we didn’t have before, and are already talking about adopting many of these practices (mostly the smoothie in the morning, no caffeine, and perhaps limiting gluten) into our daily lives after the cleanse is over.  We’re looking forward to seeing what additional improvements are to be had in week two.

Fair Isle

19 Feb

{Sweater: Old Navy; Black Jeggings: Old Navy; Over the Knee Boots: Alloy}

This outfit was one of my favorites of the entire challenge.  I never, ever in a million years could picture myself liking a Fair Isle print but I love it on this sweater.  The fact it’s really warm helps too.

Hot for Teacher

18 Feb

{Leopard Blouse: Target; V Neck Sweater: H&M; Pencil Skirt: Old Navy; Stockings: Beacon’s Closet; Shoes: Qupid}

The day I wore this outfit I called it my “Hot for Teacher” look.  I have no idea why.  I guess it means if I was a teacher, I would wear this outfit and my students would think I’m hot.  It would also mean I’m a teacher that wears leopard to work.  As you can see my animal print obsession has no limits.

Blue Ruffle Tie

17 Feb

{Ruffle Dress (layered underneath everything): Century 21; Chambray Shirt: Old Navy; Pencil Skirt: Old Navy; Zebra Belt: H&M; Over the Knee Boots: Alloy}

I don’t know why the hell I chose this blue dress for my challenge because it #1- isn’t all that flattering after looking at photos of me in it at my office Christmas party and #2- is a blue ruffle dress, how the hell do I style it differently?  So what’s a girl to do but layer an entire other outfit over the top of it and hope for the best.  I sort of like this outfit better than the dress alone.  Maybe I should just chop the ruffles off and make a necklace or tie out of it.

Sneaky Leopard

16 Feb

{Cardigan: Victoria’s Secret; Shirtdress: Loft Sale Find; Necklace: Simply Vera Wang for Kohl’s; Stockings: Beacon’s Closet; Booties: Mixx from Lulu’s}

I love my leopard!  Sometimes I have to try to not be as blatant with it, which is why I love these stockings.  Just a hint of leopard if the light hits them at the right angle.  Puuurfect!

Getting Ready To Clean

12 Feb
Our blender and juicer is standing by, ready for some serious smoothie and juicing action.

While most couples will be celebrating Valentine’s Day, my hubby and I instead will be embarking on a 3 week detox journey.  I had a few weeks back suggested to my hubs that we try Dr. Junger’s Clean Detox Program.  What better day to start a three-week cleanse than the mother of all pig out chocolate days?

It takes a lot of produce to be this clean.

The detox we’re trying consists of us having two liquid meals a day (one in the morning and one in the evening) and a solid meal for lunch.  The liquid meals can consist of smoothies, fresh juices or soups, and our solid meals can only include ingredients approved on Dr. Jungers Elimination Diet.  Basically all the “allowed” foods are ones that are known to not cause any kind of allergies in those who ingest them.  Some of the no-no foods include gluten, soy and dairy.  The whole purpose of the cleanse is not only to rid our body of toxins, but it will also give us a fresh start in discovering which foods we may have allergies to that we’re not even aware of.  With all that in mind this weekend we pigged out on everything we knew we would not be able to eat.

My hubby’s last BLT before the detox.

Other things that are suggested throughout the program is a daily meditation practice, exercise, drinking a LOT of water (as in so much you are supposed to pee once an hour), limiting snacking, getting a massage (yes please!), as well as hot/cold water therapy.

Everyone has different reasons for doing a detox program.  My primary goal is to hopefully clear my skin up, while my husband would like to detox from processed foods and lose a few pounds.  I’m really glad he decided to try this program with me being it’s supposed to be pretty challenging to follow through with it, though really worthwhile from those I’ve spoken to who have completed the entire program.  I have a feeling it may be a bit easier for me being vegan and eating pretty well to begin with.  My husband might have a harder time being he eats a lot more processed stuff than I do.  We’ll see how it goes.  Regardless we have each other for support.

I already have our meals ready for tomorrow, including one of my favorite meals, Beet and Quinoa Salad with Miso Sesame Dressing. Luckily one thing that makes the program easy is for your solid meals, as long as all the ingredients meet the elimination diet requirements, you can eat it.  Yum.

Our first prepared lunch for the program, Beet and Quinoa Salad with Miso Sesame Dressing.

Stay tuned for photos and updates and I move throughout the program.  Enjoy some Valentine’s Day chocolate for me.
