Big Weekend-What to Wear?

29 Sep

I am so freaking excited for this coming weekend for a few reasons.

  • First, October 4th marks my 2 year wedding anniversary with the love of my life.
  • Second, I took off from work and essentially have a five-day weekend.
  • Third, we’re finally doing the NYC “Staycation” we’ve been talking about for years.  We’re getting a fancy hotel in the city and doing all the touristy things we’ve always been meaning to do.  Our usual vacations consist of going to Jamaica, so this is a huge departure for us.
  • Fourth (and most exciting) is Friday we have tickets to the Friar’s Roast of Quentin Tarantino!!!!  Holy red carpet! (UPDATE: The roast was cancelled due to an editor and close friend of Tarantino’s tragic death.  It’ll be rescheduled and we’ll get to attend, but it will no longer coincide with anniversary weekend.  Bummer.)

That said, hubby and I will be doing much wining and (vegan) dining and rubbing elbows with celebs.  I didn’t want to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe for the weekend, but I did want to be able to dress up and have fun with it.  So I decided to rent a few dresses from Rent the Runway along with a few accessories to go with an existing dress I have.

Here’s what I have in mind:

For the evening of the Friar’s Roast

After putting this entire post together, my husband got a notice from the Friar’s that the roast is “business casual”.  I had originally had plans to wear this dress, but instead will pick something more appropriate for the daytime event (it’s a luncheon at 12 in the afternoon).  I’ll probably go with a pencil skirt and blouse.  I’ll still save this outfit for dinner that same evening because I think the outfit rocks.  Too bad the dress code is business-cazh because this outfit would have totally been red carpet worthy.

I’ve been DYING to wear an Herve Leger.  I know one of the best formal looks for me is body-con, and Herve is known for their body-con dresses.  Rent the Runway has a great selection of Herve’s, so I asked hubby’s input and he loved this purple multicolored number, which I felt would flatter me as well.  I also rented some black shiny earrings and cuff, and will round out the outfit with my own black pumps and faux snakeskin clutch (similar to what’s shown).

Dinner Option #1

I actually own this Dolce and Gabanna black sheath dress.  It’s been my go to LBD for years and was a fantastic investment.  As an option for dinner out one night, I plan on rocking this dress but accessorizing it with some rented pieces.  I’ve always loved Angelina Jolie‘s Oscar look the year she wore the black gown and emerald earrings, and this is my opportunity to style my dress a similar way.

Because they seem to go with everything, I’ll also wear my black platform pumps and faux snakeskin clutch with this ensemble as well.  No sheer black tights though like on the model in my dress picture.  Can you say dated?  Yuck.

Dinner Option #2

Rent the Runway has this great option to add an additional available dress for just $25 to your order.  So I decided to go ahead and add this gold Nicole Miller dress to my options for the weekend.  I’ll accessorize this one with all my own pieces, including the same clutch and shoes (less stuff to pack!) and my Miriam Haskell earrings my husband bought me for my birthday in ’08 to wear on my wedding day.

I am so freaking excited for the weekend!

Country Time

28 Sep

This past weekend the hubby, Portia the puppy and I spent some time in the country with some friends.  The trip felt a lot longer than just two days.  Here’s some photos of the things I wanted to remember.

Jailhouse Rock

24 Sep

I found this dress back in during my staycation in June at Beacon’s Closet.  It was an XL, and I usually wear a small to medium.  I’ve never been one to have stuff altered, but the price of this dress was priced right as well as body-con, which I know works well on me so I figured why not give a tailor a try?

After my Fall 2010 closet clean out I had a whole bunch of items I found that either needed repairing or altering, so I decided to search Yelp to find a good tailor in my area.  I settled on Tara, the Williamsburg Seamster based on her awesome reviews, and reached out and contacted her.  Tara actually came to my home, pinned the items I wanted altered there, brought them to her studio and then delivered them back to me a few weeks later.

I’m totally in love with the results!  I now understand why fashionista’s say to find a tailor and make them your best friend.  It makes such an amazing difference in how you look in your clothing.  I have a whole bunch of items I’ll be showcasing in the next few weeks, which I’m super excited about.  It’s almost like I have a whole new wardrobe!

I’m heading away to the country for the weekend with the hubby and puppy.  I could use a little R&R.  Posts on that soon to come.

Do you alter your clothing?  Was it as much a revelation for you the first time you tried on an altered piece as it was for me?

Brooklyn Cyclone

17 Sep

A downed tree on my route to/from work. I missed this by about 2 minutes!

Soooooo….

Long time no blog.  It’s been a crazy week or so.  Lots of late hours at the office, doctor’s appointments (I’m fine, don’t worry!) and outfits that just haven’t photographed well.  I have been taking pictures all along I just haven’t had time to post the stuff that actually came out half way decent.

So you may or may not have heard about the Brooklyn tornado last week. Actually I should say tornadoes, two were confirmed as touching ground.  And lucky me I was right in the middle of one of them.

Story goes like this:

I actually get out of work at a decent hour for a change.  I was out in my car driving at 5:10 pm (I usually leave anywhere between 5:30 and 6).  My route goes from the neighborhoods of Canarsie, through Bushwick and eventually lands home in Williamsburg.  Towards the end of my route in Bushwick, suddenly the sky, almost out of nowhere, turns black.  Like night-time black.  I remember thinking to myself  “Oh, wow.  That doesn’t look too good”.

So I continue along my merry way, and the skys open up and there’s a torrential downpour.  The rain was so bad I couldn’t see the hood of my car, so I pulled over.  That’s when the golf ball size hail started.  Starting to get a bit curious about the insane weather, I pull out my iPhone to check my Weather Channel App.  What does it say?

Tornado Warning: Brooklyn.  Seen in Park Slope

Great!

I was a ways away from Park Slope but seriously, a tornado in Brooklyn?  No way!

That’s when the wind started.  It started bending trees like I’ve never seen before.  I could even feel the wind somewhat shimmy the rear end of my car.

I started to get scared.  My husband calls me and I’m all freaking out.

Then just as I start to really freak out, it’s over.  The rain stops, the clouds clear.  It’s done.  Whew what a relief.  So I continue on home and go about my day.

I got a real wake up call the following morning on my way to work.  I pass the intersection where I pulled over, and not even a block past that intersection on that route, it looks like a war zone.  A freaking Sunoco gas station sign, the large ones that are posted really high on a pole?  It was on the ground in the middle of the gas pumps.  Awnings were destroyed everywhere.  Streets blocked off.  Insane.  The photo above is of a 4 story tall tree that was totally uprooted and fallen over on the building.  I still today can not believe how narrowly I missed being in the middle of that.  We’re talking just a few blocks.  They later confirmed there was a second tornado that touched down, and I believe that was it.

I picked a good day to leave the office on time.

The High Line

9 Sep

At the "Icons Remix" show.

Me at the High Line Park.

I know NYC has tight spaces, but the size of this restaurant is cray-zee!

On Labor Day the husband and I set out to Manhattan to check out the High Line Park.  I had never been though my hubby has, and he’s been dying to take me there on a day off from work.  Labor Day was the perfect excuse!

It was an absolutely gorgeous day outside!  The weather was perfect!  After checking out the park, we walked all over the city checking out various stores and exhibits.  We hit up the Icon’s Remix show at a gallery in the Meatpacking District which was really awesome.  From the Meatpacking District and Chelsea we then took a quick cab ride downtown to the West Village and did some furniture window shopping, as well as scoped out a variety of galleries and stores.

We ended the day with a Vietnamese dinner out and then proceeded back home on the train to collapse from exhaustion in our apartment.  I couldn’t ask for a more perfect way to end to end summer.

Back to Work

7 Sep

Ugh, it’s so difficult to get back to work after such a beautiful three-day weekend.  I rebelled by wearing leggings to work.  If I was going to work I was sure as hell at least going to be comfortable while I do so!

Oh, this is the Alloy purse I mentioned I ordered earlier but I wasn’t sure if I would like it when it arrived.  As you can tell I liked it.  I still ordered in addition to this the leopard bag I liked (to be shown in tomorrow’s post) as well as the zebra one as well.  I couldn’t make up my mind.  A girl can’t have too many bags.

So my question of the day for you is, do you think leggings should be appropriate for the office if styled the right way?  I’m thinking yes, as long as they don’t look “shlubby” I have no issues with my own employees wearing them.  Thoughts?

A Walk in the Park

7 Sep

One could not ask for a more gorgeous weekend weatherwise here in NYC this past labor day.  I was finally able to break out some sweaters!

On Sunday my husband and I ventured into the city to visit the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum.  The museum is right on Central Park, so after our visit to the museum we took a quick walk around the resevoir and downtown a few blocks back to our subway stop.  The perfect way to end a nice, lazy holiday day.

Aversion to Pink

2 Sep

I LOVE these shoes.  I’m actually kinda amazed I even bought neon pink shoes being I have this life long aversion to pink.  No joke.  I HATE pink.

My search for these shoes started when I saw these beauties at Nordstrom Rack in Union Square:

Stuart Weitzman Neon Pink Snakeskin Peeptoe Heels

I absolutely loved them, but they were over $200 on discount and made of real snakeskin.  Yucky.  So I started a month-long online search to find a pair of similar, vegan pair of neon pink snakeskin heels.

These beauties are Qupids, and cost me $19.99.  Can’t hate that.  I also got them in black just because.  Why not they’re only 19 bucks?!

I also love how these are kind of the vegan love child shoe of the Stuart Weitzman ones as well as the platform pumps Bethenny wore on the season three Real Housewives of New York reunion show.  While watching the show all I could look at was her shoes.

Bethenny and Her Awesome Shoes

Between realizing I love these shoes, and now while writing this post and noticing I designed my blog with lots of pink accents (totally subconciously btw) I now realize I’ve finally gotten over my aversion to pink.  Okay, well I guess it’s only specific to neon or hot pink.  I still hate baby dusty rose girly-ass pink.  Some things will never change.

 What I’m Wearing:

Striped Top: Forever 21
Polka Dot Scarf: Gift
Jeans: Mavi
Necklace: Gift
Shoes: Qupid
Sunglasses: Vintage 80′s found at Brooklyn Flea
