Waiting for Fall

31 Aug

It is so ridiculously hot here in Brooklyn today I can’t stand it.  It’s not too humid, but it’s still pretty unbearable.

To make the heat even worse, I got several packages delivered to work today with all the new items I recently purchased to complete my fall wardrobe.  Everything from over the knee boots, to comfy slouchy sweaters and layering pieces.  Ugh.  All I want is to wear this stuff now but it’s 102 degrees out.  Yuck.

Fall can’t come fast enough.

Maxi Dress: Century 21

Shlubby

29 Aug

I was feeling pretty ” shlubby” Saturday when I woke up. I had a long week at work and was absolutely exhausted with no motivation to get out of my pajamas.

Being it’s not socially acceptable to roam the streets of Williamsburg in my jammies, this is what I came up with. A simple chambray button down shirt, black leggings and houndstooth flats. As simple as that. All of which are just as comfy as said jammies and at least looked nice enough I could take a walk with the hubby and Portia to the farmer’s market and dog run and for them not to be embarrassed to be seen in my presence.

What I’m Wearing:
Shirt: Old Navy
Leggings: Forever 21
Flats: Stoop Sale Find
Necklace: Simply Vera for Kohl’s
Bag on My Shoulder: Forever 21

PCRM 21-Day Vegan Kickstart

27 Aug

For anyone who may be interested, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine does this great program every so often called the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart.  Many folks don’t realize that besides benefitting animals, being a vegan has really wonderful benefits for us human folk as well.

  • It drastically lowers your carbon footprint so we all benefit from a healthier environment
  • It has many health benefits, including trimming excess weight, lowering cholesterol (which is only found in animal products by the way), lowering blood pressure and preventing and reverting heart disease.
  • It’s economical.  Contrary to popular belief it’s actually more budget friendly to be a vegan than an omini due to the costs of animal products being higher than produce/grains/etc.

I did the kickstart program back in January to come back to veganism.  I was a vegan for a while back in college but had lost track through the years.  21 days is how long it takes to make something a habit, which is why the program takes that many days to complete.

What makes the program a good one is every day throughout the program you wake up to an email newsletter with a new tip on what to eat, where to eat and how to eat as a vegan.  It really helps remind you of your goal trying to eat this way over the course of the kickstart.  Occasionally the emails include either a celebrity interview or even a video.  I found it really helpful to stay on track and make veganism a “habit” again.

So if being a vegan has ever crossed your mind but you figured you don’t have the will power to do it, I highly recommend trying the PCRM 21-Day Kickstart.  You might find it’s a lot easier and healthier than you thought it would be.

New and Improved Bangs

27 Aug

I got my haircut last night.  Went a bit shorter than previously so my curls stay “bigger”.  When my hair gets longer the weight pulls my roots flat and I don’t get the funky fro vibe I’m going for.  I have to constantly flip my head over to try to get more volume, which is annoying so instead I just chopped it off.

I also decided to change my bangs up a bit.  I had what I refered to as “half-assed” side sweep bangs.  They were never as deep a side part as a wanted, so with this haircut we thickened my bangs up a bit and made the part deeper.  You can’t really see it well in these photos but I love the way they look.  It’s a great, quick update.

In other news I was pretty pissed off this morning at Portia (my puppy).  Every morning she goes to puppy daycare and every day for about the past week or so she’s been growling at me when I go to pick her up to drive her there.

This morning the little brat flat-out bit me and bit me hard!

Instead of getting my feelings hurt, I figured if she can’t appreciate the fact that I made arrangements so she doesn’t have to be alone with our fat cat all day in our boring apartment, then she deserves to stay alone in the apartment for the day, with the cat.  So there, Portia!  Grrrrrrrrr!

Animal Print Purses

25 Aug

One of my “I absolutely need to buy” items for this fall is a new fall/winter purse.  I have nothing left considering I’m getting rid of all my leather purses. It’s got to be on the larger side too being I usually carry the same bag to work and on weekends and I normally carry a lot of crap with me everywhere I go.

I initially ordered this purse from Alloy, but after reading reviews on it I’m having some buyer’s remorse.  After thinking about it with some of the other items I decided to purchase for fall, I think it’s kinda “blah”.  Depending on whether or not I like it when it actually arrives, I might return it.

Alloy at ShopStyle

The Budget Babe today had this great Dress by Number post of a Kate Moss outfit that I fell in love with.  The highlight of it for me being a leopard print purse.

A few things came to mind after seeing it:

  1. I’m jealous of Kate Moss and her impecible style.
  2. I love animal print and being leopard is a trend this fall, why fight it?
  3. Having a leopard print (or any other animal print) purse can add a pop of interest to any outfit I wear this fall/winter considering the color palettes I’m sticking with (mostly neutral).
  4. Animal prints in themselves have a neutral color palette and therefore I could probably wear the bag with anything in my wardrobe.

Score!

So I took a quick looksie on Shopstyle today to see what animal print bags caught my eye, were made of synthetic materials and fit my budget.  Here’s what I came up with:

Animal Print Purses
Jessica Simpson, Mossimo, Nine West, Merona

I’m leaning towards the bottom, middle Nine West Leopard Print bag, though I also love the zebra one as well.  Thoughts?

Stoop Sale Finds

23 Aug

Like any other weekend the hubby and I started our Saturday with a quick drive around town checking out the local stoop sales.  This weekend proved to be a particularly fruitful one considering the awesome finds I came home with.  The find of particular note was the seamstress dress form my hubs bought for me at one of the sales for only $5, which I used to display my finds in these photos.

Military Jacket- I was looking for one of these being it's a continuing fall trend. Lucky find.

Wrap Dress: It's this funky sweatshirt type material. Great for fall.

Front of Cocktail Dress

Back of the Cocktail Dress- It has this fantastic, dramatic back.

In addition to the clothing items I also scored a bunch of belts, an evening clutch, and the hubby got everything from art books to an artists light box.

Not Vegan / Vegan

22 Aug

I love Lucky Magazine. I’ve been getting it for years, and I love how in one easy publication I can learn all the new upcoming trends and get tons of shopping ideas. I always use the little sticky “YES” tabs included in the front of the magazine and dog ear practically the whole freaking thing.

Unfortunately, most of the stuff I like is way out of my budget, plus it’s not vegan. So as part of my usual shopping process, I love to attempt to find similar, less expensive (and vegan) options online. Here’s a snapshot of several items I’ve been searching for similar items for, and what I’ve found.

  1. Pour La Victoire Distressed Lambskin “Presley” Hobo Bag, $495. “Nissa” bag, available from Alloy, $14.99 (clearance item, hell yeah!)
  2. Cynthia Vincent “Devi-S” suede over the knee boots, $425. “Marlene” over the knee/ fold over cuff boot, available from Alloy, $46.90 (I’ll be getting these in black).
  3. Guiseppe Zanotti Suede Booties, $695. Qupid Nelson 03 Velvet Hidden Platform Bootie, $19.80
  4. Prada St. Coco Platform Pumps, $650. Spicy Snake Platform Pump, $22.00

Pesto Tofu with Roasted Vegetables

22 Aug

I was trying to figure out a good use for my homemade pesto this week (besides making a pasta with it), and I came up with this gem of a recipe.  It would be easy to create your own variation of it by swapping out whatever vegetables and grains (or even pasta!) you prefer.  This is the way I made it which was formulated to use up all of my CSA produce for the week as well as some leftover rice I had from a previous meal.

PESTO TOFU WITH ROASTED VEGETABLES
Serves Four

 Ingredients:

  • 1 package of firm tofu, pressed and drained, sliced into tofu “steaks”
  • 1 small chopped onion
  • 1 medium fennel bulb, chopped with fronds reserved (chop similar to how you would dill)
  • 1-2 medium tomatoes (I used an heirloom)
  • olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked brown rice
  • 1/2 cup pesto (either jarred or from scratch, see my recipe here)
  • 1/2 cup Daiya Mozzarella (or real mozzarella if you’re not vegan)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Arrange chopped tomatoes, fennel bulb and onions in the bottom of a 9×18 inch baking dish.  Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toss to evenly coat the veggies and the bottom of the pan.
  3. Arrange tofu steaks on top of the vegetables.  Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes.
  4. Remove baking dish from oven, and move the tofu slices to a plate.  If a lot of liquid has accumulated in the bottom of the dish (which happens when using tomatoes), you can drain some of it.
  5. Take 1/4 cup of the pesto and toss with the vegetables.  Brush the tofu steaks with the remaining 1/4 cup pesto.  Rearrange the tofu on top of the vegetables, and sprinkle with shredded cheese.  Place back in the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes until pesto is heated through and cheese is melted.
  6. Remove from oven.  To plate, use a 1/2 cup of rice to create a “bed” for the rest of the dish to sit upon.  Then arrange tofu slices leaning to the side of the rice, and top the rice with the roasted vegetables.  Garnish with fennel fronds and enjoy!

Wrap

21 Aug

I think this jersey wrap dress is kinda “meh”, but at the same time wrap dresses really flatter me so I can’t find it in me to get rid of this piece.  I tried to punch it up with a bright belt and patterned shoes but I’m still not sure how I feel about it.  Thoughts?

What I’m Wearing:

Dress: Filene’s Basement (purchased a long time ago)
Shoes: Atlantis Attic
Earrings: Junk in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Belt: Score Swap Meet find

Black and White

20 Aug

I finally picked up the black Mavi skinny jeans I’ve been wanting for a while.  There’s something so classic and polished about a crisp white shirt and black jeans.  What better way to throw that out the window then add some animal print?

Thank god it’s Friday.

What I’m Wearing:

Shirt: Old Navy
Necklace: Simply Vera for Kohl’s
Jeans: Mavi
Belt: my Mom’s
Sunglasses: Vintage 80′s, found at Brooklyn Flea
Shoes: Atlantis Attic
